A key challenge for many accessibility leaders to build an accessibility strategy – to move beyond a series of projects that include accessibility to a more long-term vision of how accessibility can be embedded in business as usual.
Maturity models are a tool that help organisations take stock of their position in relation to key strategic issues. They are also used to help develop roadmaps and strategies, they help identify priorities and focus on specific actions to address key issues. They also help connect with key stakeholders across an organisation and set benchmarks to help measure progress over time.
AbilityNet’s Digital Accessibility Maturity Model is one of many such models used by accessibility consultancies to work with their clients on strategic planning. It is freely available to download from the AbilityNet website (www.abilitynet.org.uk/damm) and is the basis for all the strategic planning work we do with many of our clients.
This session will draw upon the experience of accessibility leaders to discuss the role of maturity models in helping to develop an accessibility strategy, as well as successful ways to build connections with key stakeholders.

The European Accessibility Act means that inclusive and compliant customer communications are both a legal requirement and a moral imperative.
This session explores how organisations can leverage modern Customer Communications Management (CCM) solutions to design, validate, and deliver accessible content across all channels. We’ll demonstrate not only how accessibility can be built into document composition from the start (Accessibility by Design), but also how powerful remediation tools can bring historic archives into compliance without starting from scratch. Beyond regulation, accessible communication reflects the values of a tech-enabled, inclusive society.
